About my Art

We are all asked to define our art. Art is a single word, it encompasses all that call themselves artists and many that don’t. For me it is the continual refinement of the same idea, a creation of different systems, a filter or way to better see and understand myself. Most recently I have been making interactive art. Art which goes beyond simply being viewed or shown. Art which is not seen, but felt. I want to create art which is invasive, art that appears where it is not welcome, and finds homes where it had never expected. I take my art into the world so it can be a part of it.

I use art as a tool, a way to gain access, passage, understanding and knowledge. Art is a social lubricant. It has the ability to create conversations across all spectrums. It lowers our guard, overwhelms us with curiosity, and makes you open to me. My art is about understanding unknown, perceiving and finding the connects between. My art is a discovery process, I sit down with something I have never engaged with and find out how to interact. I find out how something is seen, how it is perceived, and on my path to understand, I began to see how it is connected to other paths, other ways of being. I leave a sculpture somewhere, on a railing, in a bus, under a counter, on a shoulder; and it eventually comes back to me. Someone walks ups, asks if I made this sculpture. In that I have found a connection, a point of meaning left out with no instruction other then leading back to me. Art is a way to create a memory, a validation of being real. I like how it allows me to shape who I am by allowing me to understand how others see.

My art is not so much about discipline as it is about commitment. I attach my art to my base beliefs, if I do not make it important, it will never get done. I see Art as exploration of the world around you in all its facets. I use it as a way to meditate on the everyday, find patterns and connections, and ways to move between.

My art is a test of will and endurance. Creation takes a mental and physical toll; it exercises your mind and body. The greater endurance I can achieve the more I can make, the longer I can make, the more I will be able to make the next day. Making everyday is important to me, and by doing so I make myself

I believe in the idea of art as alive. If I make something that is alive something that will eventually come to an end it will have a greater impact. People often want me to take steps to preserve my art but that would change it. It was made to come apart and be remade. I believe change is inevitable and necessary. I like art that represents one moment with another.

I like art as a conversation; a way to began. It is used to debate and up hold ideals; belief in it is belief in what it stands for. I like its freedom. Art has no rules other then the ones you impress upon yourself, it is completely open, stretching infinity before you until it fades into the horizon. There may be rules set forth by previous artists but you need not pay heed to them, only learn from them so you can be original. The freedom of thought is the most important; allowing me to see outside myself and the constructs of our world; to find new paths yet untaken.

I like art as an idea of transformation, taking one way of seeing and showing you an alternative. I like art as independent of freewill. I like art as the creation of culture and placing of importance. I like art.

I have been influenced by those that came before me, by there theories and beliefs, by their words, and most importantly by their work.
